Cheltenham Comments + HG Latest

Well what a week that was.
The Festival kicked off on Tuesday with the Supreme Nov Hurdle, 8/1 the Field, probably the most open betting heat in the Festivals History. I went for Mccoy who was on Binocular and i thought i was off to a winning start. They travelled well all through the race but after the last Captain Cee Bee (Mccoys cast off) wore them down to take the Opener in style.
After race 1 we knew that the ground was Soft and not what we had been told by Mr Claisse !!!!
The Arkle up next and Tidal Bay was a very impressive winner of a substandard renewal.
Champion Hurdle, and who would have thought it that the Irish wouldn't make the first 3 home !!
Katchit the 5yo bravely held off Osano to take the honours with Punjabi taking 3rd. A few valid excuses from the irish who will be back stronger than ever next year.
Onto the Handicaps with An Accordian, Garde Champetre and Crack Away Jack landing the spoils, the latter foiling Ashkazar in his quest to claim the Bonus from the previous Saturdays Imperial Cup.

Wednesday arrived and so did the High Winds. Cheltenham Abandoned. Called off around 8.30am. Around Midday the schedule for the remainder of the meeting came out, 10 races on Thursday and 9 on Friday. That meant the two best racing days EVER.

Thursday, winds had gone, racing was on for Bumper 10 race card.
The Four Miler started preceedings and Old Benny outstayed Over The Creek :(
SA Chase up next and we have our first winning FAV at the meeting where Albertas Run ran out a good winner.
Finger OnThe Pulse held the late challenge of the Queens Barber Shop in the Jewson Hcap.

Next was the Performance of the meeting. Master Minded, a 5yo blew the opposition away in The Champion Chase, sauntering home 19l clear of previous Champion Vor Por Estudes. At 5yo one wonders how many more Champion Chases he can win ?

Our Vic led from piller to Post in the Ryanair Chase for an easy success and boosted my flagging funds ;)
The World Hurdle up next and the amazing Inglis Drever arrives late on the scene to take the race for the Third time. He is the First Horse to record a Treble in this Grade 1 race.
Mister McGoldrick rolled back the years when routing his field in the RP Plate. His winning SP of 66/1 would be the biggest of the week.
Bally Fitz for Twiston-Davies took the Pertemps Final from Staying Chaser Miko De Beauchene.
High Chimes landed a competitive renewal of the Kim Muir from the fast finishing Openide.
Willie Mullins again landed the Bumper this time with Cousin Vinny who i think will be a very good winner of this race (some of them dont train on). Zaarito is better than his running here and was given an indifferent ride !!!!!

Friday was the day we had been waiting for. The Gold Cup match between Champion Kauto Star and The Pretender Denman. Before that though we had 5 races to get through. We had a new race this year. The first running of the Mares only event went to Whiteoak at 20/1. She travelled really well during the race and held off the late challenge of Refinement by a SH HD.
Fiveforthree stayed on strongly for Ruby Walsh as they took a strong renewal in the Ballymore Hurdle. There will be winners aplenty come out of this race and many will go Novice Chasing next season.
Naiad De Misselot came out best from Kicks For Free in a driving finish to the Coral Cup by a nose. Junior faded into 3rd and was matched for Thousands on Betfair at very short prices after leading at the last, Ouch.
The Triumph Hurdle looked a match pre race and thats how it turned out where Celestial Halo made all of the running to beat Fav Franchoek fairly comfortably.
Alan King's Nenuphar Collonges took the 3 mile Nov Hurdle from Liskennett and The Tother One who gave Sam Thomas a few steering problems going to the last. Will be interesting to see when the winner goes back over fences.

Onto the eagerly awaited Gold Cup. Kauto Star v Denman.
Kauto Star went off a shade of odds on and powerhouse Denman was a 9/4 shot.
Confidence had come for the reigning Champion but both horses looked a picture.
Paul Nicholls' other horse Neptune Collonges made the early running with Denman just behind and Kauto tracking him. With a circuit to go Denman takes up the running and Kauto gets in close to one. Away from the stands Denman leads form Neptune and Kauto with Halcon Genelardais,Exotic Dancer and Afistfullofdollars in behind. As Denman and Sam Thomas keep up the relentless gallop Kauto Star brushes through a couple more fences and you can sense he may be in trouble. Top of the hill and Denman is asked to quicken, Neptune Collonges still in second tries to follow and Ruby starts rowing away on Kauto Star, there is no initial response and Ruby gives him a crack. Denman rounds the home turn with a big lead and Kauto starts to run on, into second past Neptune he looks dangerous for a while but Denman puts it to bed with a good jump at the last and sails up the hill for a 7l victory. Kauto Star plugs on for second just holding off a resurgent Neptune Collonges close home for a memorable 1-2-3 for Paul Nicholls. Denman wins and in some style. Halcon Genelardais runs on from way back and is beaten only 16l at the line (remarkable because with 3 to jump he was well adrift).
Now my take on the race and having backed Denman is that there was not much left in the tank, where as Kauto Star didnt jump at his best and the ground softer than ideal for him .
Neptune Collonges ran with great credit and gives Nicholls a head ache where to campaign him from now on. Halcon Genelardais on this run will be hard to beat over extreme distances with his abundance in stamina.
We eagerly await the next installment and on quicker ground who knows, but on this day Denman was a worthy winner.

The foxhunters went to Amicelli, Tiger Cry a good winner of the Grand Annual and Silver Jaro took the finale The County Hurdle beating Psycho on whom Carberry over did the waiting tactics.

I showed a slight loss on the week. Tuesdays selections ran ok with a couple of places.
Thursday a small bet on Old Benny, a nice one on Our Vic and doubled up with Inglis Drever for a nice return.
Friday, small bet on Amicello (thanks to my work colleague) and with Denman doing the business in the Gold Cup i almost clawed it all back.

No winners this week at HG - recap

Cheltenham Festival Final Day

Managed to find a couple of winners on Thursday :)
Onto Fridays 9 race card, don't fancy anything strongly but here goes

12.30 Mares Only
The Festivals newest race, Chomba Womba looks a worthy Fav but i will take her on with Labelthou. Emma Lavelle has her horses running well at present and she will be hoping for her second winner of the week.

1.05 Ballymore Hurdle
See Day 2, Breedsbreeze.

1.40 Coral Cup
See Day 2, Junior.

2.15 Triumph Hurdle
Franchoek is the one to beat, his form seems rock solid and with only 15 runners this year the cream should rise to the top. Celestial Halo looks the only danger.

2.50 Albert Bartlett Nov Hurdle
Gone To Lunch finished only 9l behind Triple World Hurdler Inglis Drever, that should see him go very close here. Wouldn't put anyone off backing Carruthers or The Tother One though.

3.15 Tote Gold Cup
Sit back and enjoy !!!!!!!!
Lets hope we have an epic here, whether your on Kauto Star or Denman lets hope the best horse wins. Nothing else can possibly barring accidents. Personally i'm with Denman ;)

4.05 Foxhunters
Agus A Vic won well last time and he'll do for me, the once smart Lord Of Illusion is an interesting runner and is worth a saver.

4.40 Grand Annual
Wheres me pin !!!!!!!!!! no idea ;) Almaydan maybe.

5.20 County Hurdle
The Finale as trappy as ever. Mon Michel (Jamie rides instead of Wingman) and Missis Potts my two against the field.

Happy Punting and GL
Neil

Cheltenham Festival 10 Race Bonanza

After the postponement of Day 2 due to the high winds we have a Bumper 10 race card on Thursday.
Have given a few tips already but will keep them in time order.

12.30 NH Chase
Over The Creek , see Day 2

1.15 Sun Alliance Chase
Air Force One , see Day 2

1.40 Jewson Nov Chase
A typical wide open Festival Handicap, small interest in Paul Nicholls' pair Dear Villez and Arturio

2.20 Champion Chase
Vor Por Ustedes , see Day 2 (wouldn't rule out Twist Magic if ground has dried out)

2.55 Ryanair Chase
A guaranteed fast pace with The Listener in the field, i give Our Vic one last chance to shine.
He patently didn't stay the extended 3 mile last time but this should be right up his street.

3.30 World Hurdle
I can't have defeat for Inglis Drever, he has beaten most of these before easily and i am sure they won't turn the tables.

4.05 RP Plate
JP's Don't Push It goes in this Handicap and many feel he is very nicely handicapped but at the prices i can't have him on my mind. I go for a speculative punt on Borora who has run well in the past at the Festival.

4.40 Pertemps Final
Have absolutely no idea but if i had to choose one i would go with Nicky Richards Gunner Jack.

5.15 Kim Muir
At 7/1 or 8/1 the field it shows what an open race this is. My two against the field will be Bob Bob Bobbin and Newbay Prop.

5.50 Bumper
See Day 2 also beginning to fancy Zaarito now.

Plenty of stamina needed for this day and who used to say the Thursday of the Festival was rubbish ;)

With Cheltenham being off i turned up at Hall Green this morning to find that around half a dozen of coaches had been diverted to there. With the money burning holes in their pockets they soon got stuck into the action. Hope they didn't back any of ours cos they would have done there dough (results posted later)

Thx and GL
Neil

Tuesday 11 March 2008

Cheltenham Festival Day 2

On day 1 we hit the post a couple of times with a few placings. Hope to be in the winners enclosure on Wednesday !!!!!

2.00 Ballymore Nov Hurdle
A cracking race in prospect with Forpadydeplasterer (lol at name), Aigle D'or, Group Captain, Fiveforthree, Trafford Lad and Breedsbreeze all with major chances. I go for the latter in Breedsbreeze to kickstart Paul Nicholls' Festival but it wouldn't surprise me to see any of these winning ;)

2.35 Sun Alliance Chase
Well here goes my NAP of the meeting runs in this !!!!!!
Air Force One is the horse i am siding with. The track should suit better than it did at Ascot last time where Albertas Run beat the selection, i am convinced he will not beat him today.
Tidal Bay would be interesting if he turns out again though.

3.15 Champion Chase
The betting has got really close in the run up to todays event.
Master Minded, Voy Por Ustedes, Twist Magic and Tamarinbleu head the market.
I feel Master Minded's inexperience will find him out, Tamarinbleu will not be quite good enough and with Twist Magic the ground has gone against him.
That leaves Voy Por Ustedes (who has an outstanding Festival record) to take my confident vote.
A few say Fair Along will run a decent race but with Tamarinbleu in the race he will not be able to dominate at the head of affairs.

4.00 Coral Cup
No real view in 'My' race, just a small interest in Junior.

4.40 NH Chase
I very much like the look of Over The Creek. He will relish this longer trip and he has good form behind top novices last time out. Old Benny and Oulart are others that make some appeal.

5.20 Bumper
22 out of the 24 strong field won on their latest start. In an open race i will take small chances on Lilywhitedancer and Gold Award.

Good Luck on your picks ;)

Tuesday we had 2 runners at Hall Green
Lulu (1/8) Found trouble in her 5th place effort.
Janey (2/7) Finished a tired 4th, will come on for the run.

Cheltenham Festival Day 1

Once again the Festival is here and the next Four days will make or shatter dreams for the connections of the bravest of our Equine stars.
Each day i will post my selections and hope for the best ;)

2.00 Supreme Nov Hurdle
I like Binocular here. I am glad he runs here instead of the Triumph and with AP up i expect him to run a big race. Outsiders Sophocles and Calgary Bay.

2.35 Arkle Trophy
In a poor renewal Noland is definately the class act and for me only has to jump round to win.
Moon Over Miami could run well at a price.

3.15 Champion Hurdle
A decent contest here with Sizing Europe heading the market, Sublimity, Osana, Harchibald, Katchit and Catch Me will all be fancied but i will side with last years winner Sublimity to Win again at the expense of Sizing Europe in what should be a fascinating race.

4.00 William Hill Chase
I go for a couple here who have been around the block a few times.
Split stakes on L'ami and Monkerhostin.

4.40 Cross Country Chase
Heads OnThe Ground bids to win for the second year running and it will take a good one to beat him. Kilbeggan Blade and Casadei could run well at bigger prices.

5.20 Fred Winter Hurdle
The way Ashkazar won at the weekend it will take a very good one to beat him here. I can't see past him. Chapoturgeon and River Liane look the most obvious but as well as the favourite i will have an interest in Grand Schlem and Silmi at big odds.

Good Luck to you all with your picks at Cheltenham
Neil

Early March Update and FA Cup

After a busy start to the month of which all i seemed to have done is be at work or down at Hall Green Stadium. Here is a run down of how the dogs have performed.

Sat 8th March
Russ (1/10) 2nd in A1 beaten a SHD :(
Teddy (1/10) 2nd in A3
Tom (0/4) 6th in A2, badly needs the rail

Plenty of 2nds and 3rds there !!!!!
A strange race for us when Marvin beat Fivo, down the back they were clear and the forecast was guaranteed. Where did that 4.71 sectional come from Marv ;)

March 1/14
Year 13/84

Runners thick and fast over next couple of days with Janey and Lulu running Tuesday night and
Fivo, Belle, Teddy and Tom out on Weds Bags.
If i had to pick one out, Teddy would be the one, gl to them all :)

Whilst typing the draw for the Semis of the FA Cup was made.
What a weekend of results with Pompey, Barnsley and Cardiff upsetting the odds over Man Utd, Chelsea and Middlesborough respectively, then the Baggies eased past Bristol Rovers.
With a trip to Wembley guaranteed for all the draw is -

Barnsley v Cardiff
W.B.A v Portsmouth

I believe any of these teams can now go on to lift the Trophy but with Michelle being a mad Baggies fan lets hope the Albion can do it :)

The Cheltenham Festival begins tomorrow and i shall post some selections later.

Gl and Thx
Neil
